Review of Week 3

Hey, So, after backing up my files, and reviewing the points chart, it looks like I am going okay in the grades area. The suggested number for this week is 88 for an A and I have something like 84 so not far behind.  Of this week’s announcements I think I like the one about adding a "favicon" to your blog (shown below) for a couple reasons. The first is that I had just recently seen that setting option in my blog settings and had no clue what it was, and the second is that I love those little things. When I bookmark pages on my browser I love it when they have one and aren't just the usual google "G". As for my favorite video, I think it would definitely have to be the Jatayu Sculpture video because initially I thought it was going to be about the remains of an ancient sculpture that had been found, but instead has recently been built. I like to imagine that it may be something that future people find and marvel a...

Famous Last Words: Behind but Learning

Check the time stamp on this post and you will, no doubt, know what this is going to be about. I am yet again screeching in way past the last minute; although, I think overall, this week was better than last.  In trying to get a better handle on my schedule, I committed more of my Saturday to chores that normally get pushed off to Sunday in the hopes that on Sunday I could get more school work done. Congratulations to me, I did in fact get more school work done today then possibly any Sunday ever! Why, you ask, am I posting this so late then? Because instead of working on what is do sooner, i.e. this post right here, I got distracted working on homework that isn’t due until Thursday because it is what my study group, who aren’t in this class, were working on. Awesome. So one step forward two steps back I guess, but at least it is something. As far as the assignments earlier in the week went, I had plenty of time for reading A and cranked it out in one sitting but wh...

Feedback Strategies

Hello,  This week I learned more about feedback, and specifically ways to give better feedback. Here I would like to share with you some of the articles I read and what I found useful or interesting. "How To Give Students Specific Feedback That Actually Helps Them Learn" gave some general advice on what kinds of feedback should be given to help others. This included things that for the most part I had heard, such as making it goal oriented, actionable, and specific. Although this is good advice, it wasn't really things I hadn't heard before. Looking over at " Three Simple Frameworks for Feedback " I saw something that I wasn't really expecting. This article took some of the same ideas as "How To Give Students Specific Feedback That Actually Helps Them Learn" and provided specific tools (diagrams to be filled out, and phrases) that can help people put those ideas into action easily. I would definitely recommend taking a look at the ch...

Topic Research

Hello, After more brain storming about my project I decided that I would like to write it about Merlin. After searching through the King Arthur unit and looking at the tag Theme:Merlin, I have found 4 stories that I think might work well for the project  The Welsh Fairy Book: The Red Dragon ,  King Arthur: The Passing of Merlin , and  Britomart: The Cave of the Magician Merlin . I found there there are even more story options at in the  Freebookapalooza . Last week I talked about writing the Arthur stories from Merlin's perspective, but I think I would enjoy taking the stories already about Merlin and stringing them together into a more novel-esque fashion. For a picture I found the one you see to the left of Merlin and Vivien. It is a picture of a painting by Edward Burne-Jones, and it goes along with the story "The Passing of Merlin." It would be a good photograph to use with that story. Picture : Edward Burne-Jones [Public domain], via Wikimedia C...

Week 3 Story: Bedtime Story

Author’s Note: This story was inspired by the telling of " Cupid and Psyche " within the " Apuleiu's Golden Ass " translated by Tony Kline. In the original, the story of Cupid and Psyche is told by an old woman to a young girl who has been kidnapped by thieves the old woman works with. This way it is a story within a story. Similarly, I have included a condensed version of the story of Cupid and Psyche within this story about a mom and a daughter as a bedtime story. Here the mom is telling the story to the daughter, but she only gets half way through it before the daughter falls asleep where in the Golden Ass, the old woman finishes the tale. In the full story, Psyche goes on to betray Cupid, be tortured by Venus, and eventually be reunited with Cupid and made immortal. That seemed like a lot for a bedtime story so that is why this story only includes the first half. Jane checked on her daughter Molly as she was getting ready for bed. As Jane l...

Reading Notes: Cupid and Psyche, Reading A

Hello! For this week's first reading I chose to read  Cupid and Psyche  from the list of classical readings. This story is actually a part of a larger novel,  The Golden Ass , by Apuleius and translated by Tony Kline. In this excerpt, the fairy-tale of Cupid and Psyche is being told to a kidnapped young woman by an old woman who works with the thieves that kidnapped the first, making it a story nested within another.  This kind of nesting creates an interesting dynamic between the story and the reader because the reader must not only filter everything they read through the perspective of the old woman telling it but also look at it from that of the young woman hearing it. This adds a layer of intrigue to the fairy-tale that might otherwise not be there by calling into question the motivation of the narrator and the effect that it may be having on the fictional audience. I think that this is an interesting plot device when you look at the fairy-tale...
